The fate of the $81 million school budget and five Board of Education seats will be decided during the April 16 school board elections.
Current board members Blair Meiser and Neal Hudes are joined by three other candidates for the three open three-year terms: Mike Detsis, a district parent active in the Liberty Academy Charter School movement; Wolf Schneider, a former longtime science supervisor in the district; and David Kanaby, a district parent.
The open two-year term seat is a contest between Deborah Butcher, a public relations consultant and Woodfern School parent, and John Lisowski Jr., an attorney favoring increased long-range planning and communications efforts from the board.
Jeffrey Weinstein and Christopher P. Pulsifer are two newcomers to board politics vying for the one, one-year term. Both have children in the district’s elementary schools.
The district’s $81,057,000 budget represents a 6.8 percent spending in crease over this year’s $75,891,320 figure.
If approved, it would result in a school tax rate of $1.768 per $100 of assessed value. This is a decrease of almost 4.4 percent on the current $1.849 tax rate, but due to higher property value assessments, most homeowners will likely see a tax increase if the school budget passes.
If the budget passes, the owner of a property assessed at the township average of $300,000 would pay $5,304 in school taxes this year.
Voters will have from 2 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday to cast their votes in the elections.
