Roselle Catholic had been looking to fit in a match versus the Bordentown Regional High School boys’ varsity wrestling squad on its scheduled for much of the season.
But after Bordentown smoked Rosella, 60-19, on Wednesday afternoon, coaches at the fine Catholic school were probably having second thoughts.
The match started off with a bang for the Scotties as Kevin Wittmer pinned Roselle’s Jiminez in only 55 seconds in their bout a 215.
Bordentown forfeited at 275 and 103 (talented Andrew Carthan is still getting over a sickness), but Ryan gray got the Scotties back in the win column with a forfeit victory at 112. Mike Schoenharr (119) then floored his opponent (Brito) in only 76 seconds to give the Scotties a lead (18-12) they’d never relinquish.
Not to be outdone, Justin Moore (125) decked Roselle’s Dominguez in just 46 seconds. Then, Corey Pritchett and Brent Clemens joined Bordentown’s "pin party" at 130 and 135 respectively.
At 140, Joel Presa won by forfeit, and Casey Pritchett exhibited tremendous perseverance and stamina with his late third-period pin (5:17) over Roselle’s Harris (152).
Steady Bill Dekovitch (160) then pinned Broderick at the 1:25 mark of the first period to officially make it a blowout for Bordentown.
But Davey Sammons added the exclamation mark with a nifty 20-second pin over a fellow 189-pounder (Smith).
"Davey Sammons is starting to hit his shots," noted Coach Sprague, who is proud of the progress made by all of his ninth graders.
On Saturday, Bordentown traveled to New Egypt where the Scotties lost to a tough Warriors’ squad, 70-12.
"We matched up real bad against them," said Coach Sprague, whose best grapplers were, more often than not, pitted against New Egypt’s best.
In fact, even Brent Clemens (135), who hadn’t lost all season, suffered a defeat. His record, nonetheless, is still a stellar 9-1.
Even so Sammons was smokin’ on the mat with a first-period pin over New Egypt’s DiGangi (189).
And Jared Lynch looked good in his victory (by pin) over New Egypt’s Murray (140 pounds).
"He (Lynch) finally got a chance to wrestle at his own weight (140 pounds)," said Coach Sprague.
Most likely, Lynch will wrestle at 140 in the Districts, so Coach Sprague would like to see him get at least a few bouts at that weight in preparation for the State Tournament.
Meanwhile Schoenharr (10-5) and Moore (10-6) are starting to get some notice.
At 5-7, the Scotties are no longer a wrestling team to be taken lightly. Bordentown was also scheduled to wrestle Metuchen on Saturday, but Metuchen cancelled. Bordentown was scheduled to have competed at Burlington Township yesterday.
On Saturday Bordentown has a scheduled quad meet at Palmyra, which also includes McCorristin and Westampton Tech.
