After a "so-so" first-half, the Bordentown Regional High School girls’ varsity basketball squad came out like gangbusters in the second stanza to ultimately crush Pemberton, 61-40, on the road Tuesday night.
"It was 23-21 (Bordentown led). I think they (her girls) were afraid to lose," said Bordentown head coach Sharon Conover, who gave an important halftime speech, which inspired her club. "Then they came out and they scored 25 points in the third quarter."
The Scotties have tried many different looks on offense this season. However, in times of doubt they always go back to senior Randi Temple, the second leading scorer in school history. Temple poured in a game-high 22 points while Latoya Taylor collected 16 points versus Pemberton.
Tochi Shilow (nine points), Taryn Lynch (four points), Lauren Nucera (five points), Christina DellaFave (two points) and Emily Napolitano (three foul shots) were the Scotties other scorers in the blowout win. Pemberton may only have one win all year, but it plays hard every game.
The Scotties will scrimmage Hopewell on Friday.
Bordentown is adding such contests to stay sharp for the playoffs. In fact, on February 18, the Scotties added a powerful Red Bank Catholics squad to their scheduled. And while Red Bank Catholic captured the contest 71-33, Temple exploded for a team-high 15 points while Napolitano chipped in with eight. Temple had a pair of three-pointers in the contest. Taylor and Lynch each had a pair of field goals while Shilow also scored a bucket.
Bordentown finished its regular season with a 16-8 record its best mark in several years.
Currently, Bordentown is playing the best defense of the Sharon Conover era. And considering defense wins championships, that great "D" will be put to the test when Bordentown hosts South River on Monday night in the opening round of the Central Jersey Group II playoffs.
