"No racism, no violence in our town; everyone safe and respected" will be the rallying cry for the community march along Nassau Street and demonstration at Princeton Borough Hall planned for 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. Sunday.
The rally is the culmination of spring events organized by Not In Our Town, a local interracial, interfaith social action group, to bring attention to ongoing racism and to work toward solutions.
The march and rally will bring the problem of ongoing racism in the community to the attention of a wider public and allow Princeton residents to show support for addressing these problems now, according to organizers.
The starting point at 2:30 p.m. is the corner of Nassau Street and Cedar Lane, between the Jewish Center and the Lutheran Church of the Messiah. The route will continue on Nassau, turning onto Witherspoon Street at about 3 p.m. to Clay Street, over to John Street and back up to Palmer Square at approximately 3:30 p.m. Marchers will then continue along Nassau to Borough Hall where the rally will begin at 3:30 p.m. People are encouraged to join the line of march at any point.
The Rev. Muriel Burrows of Witherspoon Street Presbyterian Church and the Rev. Carlton Branscomb of First Baptist Church will address the assembly following greetings from Princeton Borough Mayor Mildred Trotman and Township Deputy Mayor Bernard Miller.
Monsignor Walter Nolan of St. Paul’s Roman Catholic Church will give the invocation. Rabbi Annie Tucker of the Jewish Center will close with a benediction.
Co-sponsoring the march and rally with Not In Our Town are the Princeton Clergy Association, the Coalition for Peace Action and the Latin American Legal Defense and Education Fund.
In case of rain, the event will be canceled.
