John Hreno, Tall Oak Lane
The “Silly Season” has arrived. We know this when we turn on our TVs and see Mike Ferguson’s goofy rhymes being repeated over and over again. They are recycled ads from the previous election that baselessly attack Democratic Seventh Congressional District candidate Linda Stender.
Nero fiddled as Rome burned and Leonard Lance chooses to attack Linda Stender via childish rhymes, instead of addressing what may be the greatest economic crisis since the Great Depression. This is not just my assessment; it is also that of the Wall Street Journal.
What we need are real solutions and Ms. Stender can provide the real change we need. She believes in investing in new industries and technologies to maintain and strengthen New Jersey’s economic edge.
While creating new jobs is essential, Ms. Stender also recognizes the need to ease the property tax burden of homeowners. As an assemblywoman, she helped establish homestead rebate credits for property owners.
If one does want to focus the debate on spending, consider the record of the Bush Republicans, of which Mr. Lance is one. Taxpayers will end up spending over $1 trillion for the Iraq war, a war waged over weapons of mass destruction they never had. The other week, Mr. Lance’s Republicans came hat in hand to Congress, begging for what may amount to another trillion taxpayer dollars.
This is to pay for a corporate bailout and avoid economic collapse, a near collapse that they created by relaxing government oversight of financial institutions.
We need real change in Washington and in the Seventh Congressional District this means sending Ms. Stender to represent us.
The nation cannot afford to continue down the same reckless path it’s been on. We need real change and we need it now.
