2008 is an historic year for women in American politics. Sen. Hillary Clinton created 18 million cracks in the glass ceiling, with her campaign for president, and Gov. Sarah Palin could be the first woman ever elected as vice-president.
Ms. Palin and Ms. Clinton represent fresh new voices, and assure that the government of this country will never be a “good old boys” club again.
That’s why here in Hillsborough I’m voting for Gloria McCauley for Township Committee. Ms. McCauley is the only woman running for Township Committee, in either party, and if elected, will be the only woman serving on the Township Committee.
Regardless of your party affiliation, I’m sure you’ll agree that in Hillsborough, we should embrace fresh new voices and diversity of perspectives. That’s why Ms. McCauley’s voice is so important. As the highest vote-getter elected in 2007 to the Charter Study Commission, Ms. McCauley was a strong, independent voice on that commission. Although hers was a minority opinion on the commission, she wasn’t afraid to make her views known, and she fought for smaller, less costly government, a view ultimately endorsed by the voters, when the public finally spoke.
Ms. McCauley’s strong advocacy for smaller and less costly government grows out of her volunteer service on the Township Capital Planning Committee, and our Economic and Business Development Commission. As a 20-year resident and local businesswoman, Gloria knows first-hand the importance to our quality of life, of an efficient and responsive local government.
Let’s thank Sen. Clinton and Gov. Palin for expanding women’s voices in national politics. And let’s embrace that on the local level by electing the only woman candidate for Township Committee, Gloria McCauley in November.
