Township police are trying to identify the body of a man found Thursday evening in the Shabakunk Creek at the rear of a business in the 2200 block of Princeton Pike, according to police Lt. Charles B. Edgar.
A man called the Lawrence Township Police Department at 8:38 p.m. to report a foul odor in the area, Lt. Edgar said. The caller also told police he believed he had seen a body in the creek.
Police officers found the man’s body entangled in some large tree branches and a tree stump located at the water’s edge, he said. The creek at that location is about 20 feet wide and ranges from 18 inches to 42 inches deep, the lieutenant said.
The man was about 5 feet, 8 inches, to 5 feet, 11 inches tall. He was about 45 to 55 years old and he had dark hair. He was wearing Rockport brand shoes, long, dark-colored pants, a long-sleeved navy blue shirt and a brown belt.
”The deceased person had no identification on him and he appeared to have been deceased for at least several days,” Lt. Edgar said. “Papers found in his pocket indicate he may possibly be of Polish or Eastern European descent.”
An investigation into the man’s death is continuing, he said. An autopsy to determine the cause of death may be held as soon as Saturday, he added.
Anyone with information on the identity of the man should contact police Detective Sharon Micinski of the Lawrence Township Police Department at 609-896-1111.
