ALLENTOWN: Football closing in on a winning season

Redbird girls’ soccer team earns a spot in the state playoffs

With four games left on the schedule (not counting a potential state playoff or consolation game), the Allentown High School football team is in great position to end its over 40-year run without a winning season.
Allentown improved to 3-2 this past Saturday with a 26-13 win at Lower Cape May. It marks the second time this season Allentown responded to a one-sided loss with an impressive victory.
“This is a credit to the kids,” Allentown Coach John Amabile said. “When I sat the kids down after the game I told them, ‘you had a tough game last week, but you found a way to dig down deep.’ It was an impressive performance.”
Allentown got another great game from Ross Scheuerman, who opened the scoring by catching a pass from Sean Eccles and going in for a 67-yard touchdown. Scheuerman added a 77-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. Scheuerman finished with 196 yards rushing.
Eccles completed seven passes for 159 yards. In addition to the big pass play to Scheuerman, Eccles also teamed up with Matt Mueller for a 20-yard touchdown.
Chris Fatigato added a score on a 10-yard run for Allentown’s other touchdown.
“Your preparation is the key to success,” Amabile said. “After the loss last week, we went to work in practice. We pulled this one out because we were the better team conditioning wise.”
Allentown’s 3-2 start equals the combined win total the team had in its previous four years.
“We don’t dwell on the past,” Amabile noted. “I’m just happy the kids are doing what they’re doing right now. Hopefully, this is something we can build on this week.”
Three of Allentown’s next four games will be at home, including Saturday when Allentown hosts Pennington Prep at 3 p.m. as part of its Homecoming festivities. Allentown will host Hopewell on Nov. 6 and Pinelands on Nov. 20. Allentown will play at Ramsey on Oct. 31. Allentown could also take part in a state playoff game or a consolation contest.
