SOUTH BRUNSWICK – BOE prez seeking sixth term

By Charles W. Kim, Managing Editor
So far, only one of three Board of Education members up for re-election says they will run for another term.
Board president Dr. Matthew Speesler said Monday he will seek a sixth term on the board this April.
”We still have work to do,” Dr. Speesler said before Monday night’s meeting started. “I will run again.”
Dr. Speesler, who has been on the board for the last 15 years, said he feels his experience is important as the panel continues to deal with tough economic times and shrinking support from Trenton.
”I bring that experience to the board,” Dr. Speesler said.
The two other incumbents whose three-year terms end this year, Martin Abschutz and Arthur Robinson, both said Monday that they have not yet decided if they will run again.
”My heart is with the board,” Mr. Robinson said, admitting that he is leaning toward another run for office. “I will probably run.”
Mr. Abschutz, who chairs the board’s Budget Committee with colleagues Dr. Stephen Parker and veteran member Harry Delgado, said he has not decided if he will seek another term.
Candidate kits are currently available for anyone who would like to run for the seats, district officials announced last week.
Potential candidates for the seats have until 4 p.m. March 8 to file their petitions and get their names on the ballot for the April 27 election.
The election will also decide the fate of this year’s district budget.
According to state guidelines, potential candidates must be able to read and write English, reside in the township for at least a year, be registered to vote and hold U.S. citizenship.
Potential candidates also must not have any legal action pending against, be involved with a contract with the district or may not hold office with the municipal government, according to the guidelines.
Candidate kits may be picked up between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. during the week at the district’s office at 231 Black Horse Lane, according to district officials.
Anyone who would like more information about running for the board can contact Marcia Garitano in the business office at (732) 297-7800, extention 3110 or contact her by e-mail at [email protected].
