PRINCETON: A singular Institute: Writer tells the story of the IAS through photos

Albert Einstein takes center place for this photograph taken on May 22, 1939, at the dedication ceremony for the Institute for Advanced Study’s first building. Named for Caroline Bamberger Fuld and her late husband, Felix, Fuld Hall provided much-needed space. Since 1933, the IAS faculty had grown to include professors in economics, politics, and humanistic studies. While mathematicians had offices on the campus of Princeton University, most of the others had to make do with a remodeled house on Alexander Street. Pictured, from left: Alanson B. Houghton, C. Lavinia Bamberger (Louis Bamberger’s sister), Albert Einstein, Mrs. Abraham Flexner (the successful Broadway playwright Anne Crawford), Abraham Flexner, John R. Hardin, Herbert H. Maass, and Harold W. Dodds, president of Princeton University.
