Anyone can develop a gambling problem, regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, or socio-economic status.
Though compulsive gambling does not discriminate, research has shown that the
following groups are more susceptible to gambling problems: males, individuals
who are widowed, separated or divorced, and individuals who begin gambling at a
young age. Also, compulsive gamblers are significantly more likely to have
mental health disorders and/or substance abuse disorders than those without
gambling problems. The Council on Compulsive Gambling of NJ, 1-800-GAMBLER,
provides information, education and referral services to compulsive
gamblers, their families and friends. Mercer Council on Alcoholism and Drug
Addiction (MCADA) also has educational pamphlets and videos on compulsive
gambling available. Call Chip Meara, MCADA Community Educator, at 609-396-5874,
for more information.
