HILLSBOROUGH: Students design anti-drug CD covers

   Students were invited to create anti-drug messages by creating a CD cover complete with artwork and song titles as part of the Red Ribbon Week celebration sponsored by the Hillsborough Township Life Skills Committee and the Hillsborough/Millstone Municipal Alliance.
   Last October was the 25th anniversary of Red Ribbon Week, which works to present a visible commitment toward the creation of a drug-free America.
   One of the activities during the week was the CD cover contest. Many people believe that music is one of the biggest influences over children today and thus constant handle the plastic disc cases.
   Some students created CD case inserts as part of their computer class, while some created them at home. Students were encouraged to talk to their families about their ideas for their cover. More than 300 entries were received, and the winning CDs are on display in the Municipal Building through March.
   The grand prize winners of the contest were Theresa Liu, a sixth grader at Auten Road Intermediate School, and Adrianna Yaccarino and Chris Ciurleo, both fourth-graders at Amsterdam Elementary.
   Theresa’s cover depicted 13 fists raised in the air with the words “We have the power to be drug free” written around them. Adrianna’s cover showed a piano with the words “Hit the keys with me and be drug free.” Chris’ CD had a bunch of different fishing-themed pictures with the words “Don’t get hooked on drugs.”
   The 20 runners-up were Hillsborough Elementary students Michael Huang, Emma Khorunzhy and Amber Elefante; Auten Road Intermediate School student Catherine Rommel; Hillsborough Middle School students Marjorie Calapatia, Abbey Gayle Spencer and Chris Totorello;
   Also, Woods Road School students Neil Evans, Michael Rego, Julie Parikh, Catherine Cheng, Hannah Winters and Curtis Chen; and Amsterdam Elementary students Lindsey Baum, Carrissa Johnson, Dora Szegedy, Maya Wagner, Corey Moon, Julie Lashen and Brian Guerra.
