EDISON — The resurfacing of 63 streets throughout the township’s 32 square miles is part of an extensive three phase capital improvement program.
“Our ongoing street resurfacing program and the other infrastructure improvements we have made to our sewer system, parks and recreation areas, and public facilities, are essential investments that enhance our entire community,” Mayor Thomas Lankey said.
“Until 2014, when Edison launched its street resurfacing program, many neighborhood streets had weathered years of neglect with just minimal maintenance. We now have a well-reasoned, orderly program to repave, repair and maintain our streets.”
The township director of engineering and planning assessed street conditions, took property owners’ concerns into consideration and prioritized the streets most in need of resurfacing.
Construction began in mid-September on the first phase of Edison’s 2015 Road Resurfacing Program, which includes work along Tingley Lane, Wintergreen Drive East and Stephenville Parkway. Those streets are slated for completion within the next few weeks.
The Township Council approved a construction contract for the second phase of the resurfacing program, which includes 36 streets, at a Sept. 24 special meeting. That work is set to begin within the next few weeks.
Edison is currently seeking public bids for the third phase of the resurfacing program, which includes 24 more streets. The council is expected to award contracts for that work at its Oct. 14 public meeting.
Each of the road projects includes upgrading sidewalk ramps to meet the most current Americans with Disabilities Act standards, repairing and upgrading storm drain inlets, repairing roadway underlayments, and milling and repaving.
