The Route 206 bypass road has been named after late Assemblyman Peter J. Biondi.
Gov. Chris Christie has signed legislation sponsored by the district’s legislative representatives.
In the Assembly, Mr. Biondi was instrumental in getting funding for the Route 206 bypass.
"Pete lived the life of a true public servant, dedicating his life to work for the residents of Somerset County and Hillsborough," said Sen. Christopher Kip Bateman. "From serving as a volunteer firefighter, to mentoring young political candidates to serving in the Assembly, he worked tirelessly to better the lives of others."
Assemblyman Jack Ciattarelli, also a Hillsborough resident, said, "Pete, who was fondly known as Mr. Hillsborough, knew what the 206 bypass meant to Hillsborough’s quality-of-life and the realization of its downtown vision plan. Dedicating the bypass to Pete is a perfectly appropriate and altogether fitting way to honor his memory and his public service, which left an indelible imprint on Hillsborough and Somerset County."
The legislation names the Peter J. Biondi Bypass without expense to state taxpayers.
"Renaming the Route 206 bypass for a man who dedicated his life serving the community is a very appropriate way to say thank you to someone who has done so much for so many. We will always remember Pete with gratitude for his public service as a volunteer, elected official and Army Reserve veteran," said Assemblywoman Donna Simon.
Mr. Biondi, who lost his battle with cancer in November 2011, served the 16th Legislative District for 14 years. He had previously served as the mayor of Hillsborough and as a Somerset County freeholder.
