Walking to raise breast cancer awareness

To the editor:
Larry and I are walking at the Komen Central and South Jersey Race for the Cure this Sunday, Oct. 6, at Six Flags Great Adventure to honor our beloved moms. We remember my mom’s dignity and courage and celebrate my mother-in-law.
Why do we continue to walk? Why continue to raise awareness? Because there are women who are underserved, uninsured or underinsured and need accurate information, and may qualify for either free or low cost mammogram. They may include your childcare helper, caregiver for sick family member, or housekeeper who beautifies your home. Often they have no access to healthcare or health education.
We walk to continue outstanding results over these 20 years — thousands of free mammograms, countless hours of community vital breast cancer education, breast cancer survivors advocacy, and research funding for new treatments and improved diagnostics.
When breast cancer is diagnosed early, before it spreads beyond the breast, the survival rate is now 98 percent compared to 74 percent in 1980. Please join the Race for the Cure. Call 609-896-1203. Get your daily exercise (separate 5K women/men, health walks, and children’s fun run) and let us come together for a great cause. You will feel wonderful!
