Registered dietician Teresa Grasso and technician Gary Young from the Community Mobile Health Program of St. Peter’s Hospital gave a presentation Nov. 11 on healthy snacking and how it relates to a healthy diet.
She emphasized using the four groups — whole grains, vegetables, dairy and protein — in your diet. The best time for snacking is between lunch and dinner when your energy level is low. Keep your choices under 200 calories and watch the portion size.
Examples of snacks are popcorn, yogurt, fruit, bean dips, vegetables, smoothies, nuts and non-perishable items, such as granola bars and trail mix. You can mix various choices, such as yogurt with fruit or nuts, or bean dip with fresh vegetables. Just remember this is only a snack and not a meal, Don’t overdo it.
