EDISON — A organization that focuses on helping children recently received recognition from the Township Council.

Kids Need Support 2, a nonprofit charity based in the Colonia section of Woodbridge that holds many of its events at Edison’s Minnie B. Veal Community Center, supports disadvantaged children — many of whom have special needs or chronic illnesses — through educational and social events, as well as advocacy efforts. The organization’s theme for this year is “Chasing Miracles.”

“I like the name — Kids Need Support 2,” Councilman Robert Karabinchak said. “I think that’s great … it says everything about what you’re doing.”

The council honored the organization at the start of its Aug. 19 meeting.

According to the township resolution, Kids Need Support 2 has worked with various Edison entities, including the recreation department and the North Edison library.

One major effort the group has undertaken is the healing garden at the Minnie B. Veal Community Center. At the garden, volunteers and children tend to the vegetables, fruit and flowers, providing opportunities for education and empowerment.

The council recognized the organization for its positive contributions to the lives of area youth.

Karabinchak praised the program and said he would like to see Kids Need Support 2 expand its efforts in the township.

Council President Robert Diehl also complimented the group, adding that organizations like Kids Need Support 2 are vital during a child’s formative years in helping him or her become successful later in life. He also said that when an adult is successful, it can often be traced back to receiving the right support early on.

After the council unanimously approved the resolution, representatives and youngsters from Kids Need Support 2 came forward to receive the resolution from Diehl.

“We are honored to bring this program to Edison,” said Kids Need Support 2 Executive Director and President Candace Ashe, who introduced fellow members of the program and spoke about the various support roles they play, such as mentor, physical fitness instructor and nutritionist.

She said the organization was started — and named — by her two sons, Emanuel and Elijah Ashe. In fact, the organization’s motto is “I am my brother’s/sister’s keeper … It’s just that simple!” Youngsters also introduced themselves.

Ashe said the organization is looking at more ways to contribute positively to the township.

“If we’re not part of the solution, we’re part of the problem,” she said.

“Continue the good work, please,” Diehl said at the close of the presentation.
