Hillsborough resident John “Lenny” Parham has been hired as Hillsborough High School head boys’ basketball coach.
Mr. Parham, who has high school and college coaching experience, will succeed Ian Progin, who resigned after 12 seasons at the head of the program.
“Ian did a great job, and I’ll try to keep it at the same level he had it,” said Mr. Parham.
Mr. Parham for the last decade has been an athletic director at Dumont (2004-05) and then New Brunswick (2008-14) high schools. His last coaching job was at Plainfield High School, where his team won a Group 4 state championship in 2004-05 before losing to Lenape in the Tournament of Champions final.
He starts as dean of students at Asbury Park High School in the fall, he said.
His appointment was approved by a vote of 4-1, with two abstentions, by the school board. Jennifer Haley voted no, and Steven Cohen and Deena Centofanti abstained.
He has coached at the university level, starting at East Stroudsburg, and including Drew, William Patterson, Northern Arizona, Pittsburgh and Drake.
He has a son, sophomore Jackson, in the program. Another son, Jalen, graduated last year.
