In response to the recent shooting at a black church in Charleston, SC, an Interfaith Prayer Vigil for Peace and Racial Justice is being organized by Mt. Pisgah AME Church in collaboration with the Princeton Clergy Association and the Coalition for Peace Action from 7 to 8:45 p.m. on Wednesday in Princeton.
The event begins with a march from Mt. Pisgah AME Church (the same denomination as where the shooting in South Carolina occurred), at 170 Witherspoon St. Supporters are urged to gather the front of the church starting at 7 p.m.. The approximately quarter-mile march from the church will finish at Tiger Park in the front of Palmer Square.
The Interfaith Prayer Vigil will be from 7:30-8:45 p.m. at Tiger Park. Those who can’t march are welcome to go straight there. Area faith leaders will offer prayers and reflections. Among them will be the Rev. Dr. Deborah Brooks, pastor of Mt. Pisgah; Rabbi Adam Feldman of the Princeton Jewish Center, who is also vice-chair of the Princeton Clergy Association; the Rev. Dr. Deborah Blanks, associate dean of religious life, Princeton University; the Rev. Carlton Branscomb, pastor, First Baptist Church; Imam Qareeb Bashir, Islamic Center of Ewing; and the Rev. Robert Moore, executive director of the Coalition for Peace Action and co-pastor of Christ Congregation in Princeton.
Princeton Mayor Liz Lempert will also speak. The evening will conclude with a candlelight vigil as darkness falls at 8:45 p.m.
