Metuchen principal tapped as new YMCA board chair

The YMCA of Metuchen, Edison, Woodbridge & South Amboy has appointed Bruce Peragallo as its new board chairman.

Peragallo, a Metuchen resident and principal of Metuchen High School, succeeds Lucinda Florio, who stepped down as chairwoman but will remain on the YMCA board of directors.

“It’s truly an honor and privilege to be given this opportunity as the board chair of the YMCA of Metuchen, Edison, Woodbridge & South Amboy,” Peragallo said. “I’m looking forward to working with the YMCA staff and the many volunteers that make up our organization. My hope is to maintain the quality of service that we provide to our members.”

Peragallo has a long history in education. Before becoming principal of Metuchen High School, he served as vice principal from 2007-09, during which time he coordinated the Middle States Accreditation process.

Prior to his tenure at Metuchen High School, Peragallo was the supervisor of health and physical education for the West Orange School District, also serving as athletic director at West Orange High School. He taught health, physical education and driver’s education in several school districts, and coached sports at the college and high school levels.

For more than 20 years, Peragallo has served as an adjunct professor at Kean University, where he teaches a capstone course to senior health and physical education student teachers.

A longtime member of the local YMCA organization, Peragallo has served in many capacities on its board. He is a member of the corporate board and former president of the branch board in Woodbridge and South Amboy. He served on the human resources and strategic planning committees, and was a member of the Metuchen branch board.

The YMCA of Metuchen, Edison, Woodbridge & South Amboy board of directors provides governance, policy direction, strategic guidance and fundraising support for the entire association.
