A five-car accident sent two of the five drivers to the University Medical Center of Princeton at Plainsboro and closed down Bayard Lane/Route 206 for nearly 90 minutes Thursday morning, according to the Princeton Police Department.
The 7:33 a.m. accident occurred when a 2003 Honda Accord driven by a 17-year-old boy, which was headed south on Bayard Lane, crossed the center line and struck two cars that were traveling north, police said. It occurred south of the intersection of Bayard Lane and Boudinot Street.
The teenager’s car struck a 2005 Nissan Altima driven by Michael Kovacs, 45, of Mercerville, and a 2005 Audi A6 driven by Daphine Corbin, 34, of Belle Mead. She was traveling behind Mr. Kovacs’ car. The three cars suffered extensive damage and were towed from the scene.
Mr. Kovacs and Ms. Corbin suffered non-life threatening upper body injuries, and were taken to the University Medical Center of Princeton at Plainsboro by the Princeton First Aid and Rescue Squad, police said.
The fourth and fifth cars involved in the accident were a 2008 Honda Accord that was being operated by Ann Monaghan, 49, of Princeton, and a Ford pickup truck driven by Felipe Lopez, 52, of Lawrence Township, police said.
Ms. Monaghan was also traveling north, behind Ms. Corbin’s car. She braked to avoid the accident, but her car was struck in the rear by Mr. Lopez’s pickup truck, police said. Neither driver was injured, and both vehicles were able to be driven away.
The 17-year-old driver was given summonses for careless driving and failure to maintain his lane.
Bayard Lane was closed for nearly 90 minutes while police investigated the accident. Traffic was detoured away from the accident scene, causing major backups in the area, police said. The road was reopened at 9 a.m.
