Police arrest suspect in attempted auto theft

EDISON — An overnight visit by police to an Audi dealership resulted in the arrest of a man who allegedly was attempting to steal a car from the lot.

Patrolman Chris Teleposky arrived at Bell Audi, located at 782 Route 1 north, at around 3:15 a.m. Sept. 4 after police received a call that two males were seen at the site. Upon his arrival, Teleposky witnessed two black males with hooded sweatshirts in the lot near an Audi A5, valued at approximately $54,000.

“Once the suspects saw Teleposky, they started to run toward Route 1,” Lt. Joseph Shannon said. “Teleposky chased the suspects for about a quarter mile on the northbound side of Route 1 before apprehending one of them.”

Shermaine M. Patrick, 19, of Irvington, was arrested and charged with criminal attempted theft of a motor vehicle, and with obstruction and hindering for allegedly lying about his real name once he was arrested, according to a press release. Patrick’s bail was set at $75,000, and he was taken to the Middlesex County Adult Correction Center, North Brunswick.

Police are still looking for the second suspect, who was described as wearing a dark-colored hooded sweatshirt. Anyone with information is encouraged to call the Edison Police Department at 732-248-7400.
