The Middlesex Community College wrestling team finished in 17th place at the National Junior College Athletic Association Championships held in Spokane, Wa. Feb. 25-26. Middlesex qualified for the NJCAAby winning its District tournament.
Middlesex had eight wrestlers competing at the championships. They were Heriberto Quintana, Perth Amboy (125), Gabriel Roman, Perth Amboy (133), Don Smith, Carteret (141), Paul Saraiva, Marlboro (157), Ken Dougherty, Forked River (165), John McArdle, Somerset (174), Nicholas Orak, Old Bride (184) and Thomas Hunt, East Brunswick (197).
McArdle won three matches and finished in eighth to earn All-American honors.
Middlesex scored 26.5 points at the championships.
Teams are being formed for the Middlesex County Parks and Recreation Department’s men’s Sunday softball league that will begin in late March. Games will be played at Thomas Edison Park in Edison or at William Warren Park in Woodbridge. The first set of double-header games starts at noon. The fee is $275 per team, plus a $100 per-team refundable forfeit deposit. Umpire fees, $21 per team per game, are to be paid at the field on game days. Check or money order only. No cash will be accepted. Space is very limited. Teams will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Deadline for entering a team is March 11. Central Jersey Travel Baseball League is taking registrations from teams interested in playing in the 2011 spring season, beginning March 27 and concluding with the championship on Sunday, June 19. Games are usually scheduled for Sundays. Divisions are divided by strength and geographical location, with divisions for select teams, town all-star teams and town B teams.
