EDISON — The township hopes to remove some "eye sores" from the roadways.

The Planning Board is preparing redevelopment plans for two vacant gas station sites, both on the corner of Route 27 and Plainfield Avenue.

The plans will be done by Thomas Sheehan, board planner, and will show what the township thinks should be put at the busy intersection.

Having a redevelopment plan gives the township the power to "spur the development process on," said Louis Rainone, township attorney.

There may be intersection improvements in the redevelopment plan to improve traffic through the crowded roads, Rainone said.

The Shell gas station has been vacant since the late 1990s, said Business Administrator Jonathan Capp.

The other gas station has been vacant for such a long time that no one at the Township Council meeting on Feb. 25 could remember what type of gas station was there.

"We’re finally taking the first step to removing these eye sores and hopefully it won’t take too long," said Councilwoman Joan Kapitan.
