Temple B’nai Shalom in East Brunswick held a “pink” Shabbat service on Oct. 23 in recognition of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. One in 40 Jews of Ashkenazi descent carries a BRCA (breast cancer) gene mutation, making Jewish families at 10 times greater risk than the general population. Fredda Fleischman, left to right, Zeena Fleischman and Lillian Moore of the Temple B’nai Shalom Sisterhood’s Crafty Ladies group presented 100 hand-crocheted, colorful chemo caps to be donated to the Regional Cancer Care Associates office of Dr. Michael Nissenblatt for use by cancer patients across central New Jersey. The evening was organized by Harriet Golub (fourth from left) while the service was conducted by Rabbi Eric Eisenkramer (second from right) of Temple B’nai Shalom. The featured speaker was Melissa Rosen, far right, director of the National Outreach of Shasheret, the Jewish community response to breast cancer.
