Emergency responders will try to strike out educators. On Oct. 6, members of the North Brunswick Police Department will challenge educators from the North Brunswick School District to a charity softball game to benefit the North Brunswick Fire Department.
More than 150 firefighters from North Brunswick Volunteer Fire Cos. 1, 2 and 3 battled a blaze at a million-square-foot warehouse on Livingston Avenue in July, causing the loss of a significant amount of gear and equipment. In response, the town is banding together to raise funds for costs that the fire department’s insurance company will not cover — which could run well over $100,000.
“Our team is ready. We’re ready to go,” Police Capt. Brian Hoiberg said good naturedly during a press conference on Sept. 21. The two teams have played against each other in the past to benefit the North Brunswick Domestic Violence Response Team and a police officer who fell ill.
“It’s a positive interaction between police and the staff,” said Pete Clark, principal of North Brunswick Township High School. “We hope people come out who didn’t know how to thank the first responders of that warehouse fire.”
A pre-game ceremony will begin at 5:45 p.m. Oct. 6 at North Brunswick Community Park, 2053 Route 130 south. A group of firefighters will throw out the first pitch.
The game will begin at 6.
A donation of $5 is requested for the fire department.
Clark said the Little League and North Brunswick Baseball & Softball Association organizations are graciously preparing the field and will donate proceeds from concession stand sales to the fire department.
