MILLSTONE – The township will hold a community litter cleanup and a tire dropoff on Oct. 3.
Participants in the litter cleanup will meet up at the Department of Public Works garage, 899 Perrineville Road. The cleanup will run from 9-11 a.m. All volunteers must sign a waiver and an adult must accompany any volunteer under the age of 18.
The cleanup will take place along municipal roads and in parks, if necessary, according to municipal officials.
Clean Communities Coordinator Lori Maher said that in the past the cleanup has included Novak Court, which is behind several fast food restaurants on Route 537.
“We have to be careful which roads we go to,” Maher said. “Some of the roads are narrow and we do not want to put people in danger.”
During a stream cleanup in the spring, 60 volunteers hauled away more than 1,380 pounds of trash that was spoiling Millstone’s landscape.
“We just want to keep Millstone clean and litter free,” Maher said.
The tire drop-off will take place at the Department of Public Works garage from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 3. This is the first tire drop-off in the community since 2013 and the first under Recycling Coordinator Dan Specht.
The tire drop-off is limited to Millstone residents and proof of residency will be required.
According to Specht, there is limited space available for tires so scheduling a time for the drop-off is recommended in order to prevent people from waiting in line. In the past there have been more tires than space in garbage bins, so some tires had to go into storage.
“Tires are a fire hazard and end up being the perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes,” Specht said.
There is no cost to drop off the tires on Oct. 3.
