There’s little doubt that the Bordentown Regional High School boys’ varsity golf team went into Tuesday’s match versus Burlington City at Rancocas Valley Golf Club looking for a win. Instead, the Blue Devils handed the Scotties a very tough 208-212 loss.
"I don’t know if it was the fact that it was our first match, but our low score was a 50," said Bordentown head coach Dave Dudzinski, whose team had been averaging well under 200 in its practice matches with a team best score of 188.
Against Burlington City, Bordentown’s Dan Caldwell shot a round of 50, which just so happened to be the worst round he’s shot all spring. To Caldwell’s credit, the course was very difficult one.
Caldwell’s playing partner, Pat Kwelty, shot a 51 for Bordentown.
"The funny thing is they (Caldwell and Kwelty) beat the two guys (from Burlington City) they were playing with," added Coach Dudzinski. Bordentown’s other leading scorers were Eric Timm (53), Matt Rodenbaugh (58) and Matt Brayton (58).
"This one definitely slipped through our fingers," said Coach Dudzinski. "They (Burlington City) didn’t shoot ‘lights out’ either."
Still, the Scotties had been off for several days and their golf games were a little rusty. Coach Dudzinski, for one, knows they are capable of much greater things.
"We’re going to get better," said the experienced Bordentown head coach.
Bordentown is scheduled to host McCorristin on Thursday. Then, next Tuesday, Bordentown is scheduled at Cinnaminson. In their practices this week the Scotties will practice their mid-range shots.
