The Allentown United U12 boys’ soccer team began its season in Premier Division IV with a victory over the Toms River Destroyers, 3-2. The game was well played by both teams. Josh Howell began the offensive with a goal, followed by Brandon Smith placing two precision PKs. Game two was a decisive shutout over the LMSA Vipers with a final score of 6-0, made possible by the outstanding defensive effort of Matt Wilhelm, Sam Florio, Natalie Howell, Andrew Rauth and Matt Sargent. Saskia Hesselein started both games as goalkeeper with a strong display of confidence. Joey Cook and Brandon Smith were constantly feeding the offense with their outstanding efforts from the midfield position. The offensive attack was supported by Antony Mazzuca, Kyle Ondy and Amber Hoffman. United had dominating offensive performances by its front line of Drew McGovern (2), Josh Howell (2), William Morris (1), and Jimmy Search (1). This week’s games are both at home in Jackson’s Patriot’s Park on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. against the Lakewood Blue Blazers, and Saturday at noon against the Pineland Red Hots.

The Allentown United U-14 (co-ed) soccer team extended its Jersey Coast unbeaten streak to 12 matches with a 6-0 shutout in a game against the undermanned Toms River Youth Blasters. Unseasonably cold and blustery weather did not slow the United offense as it got first half goals from winger Jen Taylor, forward Brian Pereira and midfielder Greg Koday. The offense didn’t let up in the second half with tallies from Pereira and wingers Matt O’Hare and Nate Cornell. Outstanding efforts were turned in by stopper Ben Koontz and sweeper Kevin Pope on the defensive end, while forward Danny DiRocco and midfielder Jackson Hoover kept the offense on the attack for most of the afternoon match. The win upped United’s record to 2-0-1 and moved the team into a tie for third place in the league standings. Allentown sees action again this Saturday at 10:15 a.m. in an away match against the Berkeley Kickers.
