North Ninth Avenue resident Ann Marie McCarthy has a new job, which is just a little more than a stone’s throw from home. Earlier this month, Ms. McCarthy took on the position of Hillsborough Township municipal clerk.
"I like it here very much," said Ms. McCarthy of her new position in Hillsborough. "Everyone has been really nice and it’s been a great place to work."
A lifelong resident of Manville, and 1983 graduate of Manville High School, Ms. McCarthy began her career as an administrative assistant in the borough clerk’s office in Manville. Most recently, Ms. McCarthy served as municipal clerk for Rockaway Borough.
In comparing the two municipalities, and the issues each community is facing, Ms. McCarthy noted that Hillsborough and Rockaway, although different on many levels, do share some commonalties.
"Hillsborough is much bigger than Rockaway," she said, noting that while Hillsborough has an abundance of open space, Rockaway has very little. Despite the differences in size and open space available to each community, however, Ms. McCarthy noted that both share a common problem in finding suitable locations for athletic fields.
Ms. McCarthy has been a registered municipal clerk since 1997 and a certified municipal clerk since 2000. She is working toward a bachelor’s degree in political science at Thomas Edison State College.
Ms. McCarthy has two daughters, ages 16 and 12, and an 8-year-old son. The children attend Manville High School, Alexander Batchco Middle School and Weston Elementary School respectively.
Ms. McCarthy was appointed to the position on March 12, after former Municipal Clerk Gail McKane quit. She is receiving a salary of $60,000 per year.
