In what would have been a terrific upset, the Peddie girls’ lacrosse team came within one goal of shocking top-seeded Lawrenceville in the state Prep A Tournament semifinals last Thursday.
Ultimately, the Big Red held on for an 11-10 win over the visiting Falcons. The loss ended the season for Peddie with an 11-7 record.
The 5th-seeded Falcons gave the Big Red all they could handle, though. After a 7-7 first half, the score was tied at 10-10 when, with about three minutes left, Lawrenceville netted the winner.
"We played very well," said coach Alison Warner. "It kind of went back-and-forth. Anyone could have won it."
Afterwards, "The loss was kind of hard to take. The girls played the best game they played all season that day.
"We were all disappointed, but they knew they had played a great game. Obviously, they wanted to win."
Kat Peetz and Whitney Douthett each had 4 goals for the locals. Kristen Bocina and Kerri Walker closed out the scoring with one goal apiece. Goalie Brittany Bessler had 10 saves as Peddie outshot Lawrenceville, 25-22.
Of the Falcons’ season, Warner said, "It started slow, but we had a big win at the end over Hunterdon Central. We also had close losses to Bridgewater-Raritan (11-8) and to Lawrenceville.
"The team got better as the season went on. Eleven wins is about right. I didn’t expect them to play as well as they did against Lawrenceville."
With everyone except seniors Bocina and Jess Nairn returning, next year should be an even better one for Peddie.
