Robbery attempt fails

EATONTOWN — A man armed with a gun attempted to rob the 7-Eleven convenience store located at the intersection of Route 35 and Route 71.

Police reported that the man, described as a white male 35 to 40 years of age, entered the store at 3:41 p.m. on Sunday, called the cashier to the counter and demanded the money from the register.

When the cashier attempted to activate the alarm, the man told her not to do that and lifted up his shirt to display a handgun that was tucked into his waistband, police said.

According to police, the man fled on foot without getting any money.

The borough’s police K-9 unit, made up of Patrolman Thomas Ferrugia and his dog Xena, was called out but was unable to pick up a trail, police said.

The robber was wearing a light-colored, long-sleeved T-shirt, jeans, black shoes, a red baseball hat and possibly a fake mustache, police said.

Any witnesses to the incident are asked to contact Detective Mark McGowan at the borough police department at (732) 389-7644.
