Applications accepted for citizens academy

The Monmouth County Sheriff’s Office Citizens Police Academy is now accepting applications for 2003, with application deadline Sept. 3. Free Academy classes will be Wednesdays Sept. 10 through Nov. 19 from 7-9:30 p.m. at the Monmouth County Police Academy, Kozloski Road, Freehold Township.

According to Monmouth County Sheriff Joseph W. Oxley, the academy graduates will gain an understanding and appreciation of the roles and responsibilities of the profession, and will ultimately become "goodwill ambassadors" between residents and the law enforcement community. Also, by understanding the services offered by the sheriff’s office, area residents can help the office pass along the understanding to the residents’ neighbors and friends.

Participants will be exposed to police topics such as investigations and forensics, traffic safety and enforcement, domestic violence, crime prevention, DWI enforcement, mutual aid and emergency management, and triad.

Interested individuals must be Monmouth County residents at least 21 years of age, and have transportation to and from the academy. Applications will then be reviewed by a triad committee. The New Jersey Triad Officers Association is a three-way partnership between the Sheriff’s Office, the Office on Aging and the Chief of Police Association.

Applications selected for the next phase are given a thorough background check including criminal history, driver’s license status and warrant check. Invitations will then be sent to attend the Citizens Police Academy (attendance will be limited).
