Relay for Life an important event in fight against cancer

The American Cancer Society Relay for Life movement has swept across Freehold and surrounding communities. The cancer survivors, caregivers, family and friends who participated in Relay for Life at Freehold Raceway on June 7 were joined by hundreds of thousands more across the country. Throughout the United States, Relay for Life participants joined together with one goal in mind — to put an end to cancer.

Despite heavy rain, more than 1,000 people participated in the Freehold Relay For Life this year, raising $230,000 to date for the American Cancer Society’s programs of research, education, advocacy and patient services.

Eighty-one cancer survivors and their guests attended the luncheon in their honor and proudly kicked off the relay by walking the survivor recognition lap, reminding us all that they are the reason we continue the fight. Their battle gives us hope that cancer can be beaten and reminds us all of how important early detection truly is.

A special thanks to the many Relay for Life volunteers who worked to make this event a success and to the many entertainers that donate their time and talent to truly make the relay a "celebration of life."

We also appreciate the generosity of this year’s sponsors, especially Builders General Supply Co.; Lomurro, Davison, Eastman and Munoz; and Greater Media Newspapers for their contributions and participation in this year’s Relay for Life. A special thank you to the Freehold Raceway for their generosity year after year in providing the best site.

The commitment of everyone involved has helped Relay for Life become a worldwide movement spreading to over 3,800 communities in the United States and taking place in eight countries.

The looks on the faces of the participants, survivors and loved ones say it all: Relay for Life is a magical moment in time. It is an event that no one involved can ever forget.

The heavy rains this year forced us to make the decision to shut down the event before all the participants had the opportunity to experience the relay. But the safety of all involved was the determining factor.

The committee looks forward to sharing with you at Relay 2004 all the wonderful activities, entertainment and ceremonies that they had planned for you this year. We were amazed at the commitment and spirit of all the survivors, caregivers and participants who didn’t let a "little rain" stop them from celebrating their life and their hope for the future.

Again, thank you for supporting the American Cancer Society and remember, it’s not too early to become involved in Relay for Life for next year. To find out how, contact your local American Cancer Society at (800) ACS-2345.
