LITTLE SILVER — The Borough Council approved contracts and large purchases of more than $350,000 at its last meeting.

The largest single expenditure approved was a contract as part of the borough’s 2003 roadway improvement program.

Fernandes Construction, South River, was the lowest of four bidders on the work, which includes the recurbing and repaving of Prospect Avenue from Rumson Road to Harding Road, Westwood Court and the Borough Hall parking lot. There also are two drainage projects — repairing the inlet at Little Silver Point Road (Howard’s Beach) to the outfall, and repairing the outfall at the pump station of the Two Rivers Water Reclamation Authority on Little Silver Point Road.

Fernandes Construction submitted a bid of $245,930 to do the work. The other bidders were Lucas Brothers of Morganville, at $271,230; Meco Inc. of Millstone, at $300,500, and Intercounty Paving of Hackettstown, at $327,197.50.

The council also agreed to purchase a 6-yard dump truck with a snow plow, for $94,755, from International Trucks of Central Jersey, Howell. International Trucks was the only company to bid on supplying the truck.

A Harley-Davidson motorcycle was purchased for the Police Department. The council awarded the contract for the purchase of a new 2003 Harley-Davidson FLHPI two-tone black and white motorcycle to Mike’s Famous Harley-Davidson, of New Castle, Del., for $15,432.83.

Mike’s will give the borough a $10,000 credit for a trade-in on the current Police Department Harley-Davidson motorcycle.

The council awarded a five-year contract for disposal of recyclables to Recycle America Alliance LLC, Delaware, which has an office on Sunset Avenue in Ocean Township.

The contract covers the period from Aug. 1, 2003, to July 31, 2008. The company will pay the borough for each type of paper it collects, and will charge the borough for the commingled glass, cans and plastic containers it picks up.
