It was an opportunity for community members, families and church members to enjoy the last few weeks of summer, as the Church of the Epiphany held its five-day carnival last week in Brick.

Residents gathered to enjoy food, music, rides, games and prizes at the church’s third carnival in four years. The festivities were held on the parish grounds, Herbertsville and Thiele roads, and ran from Aug. 19-23.

The Rev. Jay Bowden, pastor of the Church of the Epiphany Parish, was on hand, taking photographs of the event and greeting people, despite having lost his voice yelling out 50/50 raffle numbers at the start of the carnival on Aug. 19.

"It’s good to see so many people come out and having a good time," Bowden said.

Bowden said a committee of church members has worked since mid-winter to prepare and pull off a successful carnival. The committee’s work was evident as workers and staff showed up early, and large crowds filtered into the church parking lot.

Pat Suarez, of Brick, a carnival staff member, arrived at noon on Thursday to start preparing food for the day. Among the foods prepared by Suarez and other volunteers were heaps of ribs, corn, hamburgers, corn dogs, fries and empanadas.

Suarez, a parish member, said she was enjoying her time at the carnival, and anticipated crowds to swell as the night wore on. Reasons for large crowds were easy. The carnival offered loads of food, friendly service, raffle prizes worth hundreds of dollars, and rides for all ages.

Bowden said the money raised from this parish event will be used to fund various church improvements.

Bowden said he and many other parish members had prayed frequently for good weather, safety and a good time at this year’s carnival event.
