The Kean University Coaches’ Basketball Chalk Talk will be held Oct. 12 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Kean’s D’Angola Gymnasium. Guest speakers will include Bobby Hurley of St. Anthony’s High School, (topic: basketball conditioning drills); Gary Waters of Rutgers University (topic: transition game); Fran Fraschilla, an ESPN TV analyst and former coach at St. John’s University, Manhattan College and the University of New Mexico (topic: set plays); Don Harnum of Rider University (topic: developing your player); Dave Calloway of Monmouth University (topic: match-up defense); Bobby Gonzalez of Manhattan College (topic: pressure defense); Harry Peretta of Villanova University (topic: motion offense; and Derreck Whittenburg of Fordham University (topic: 2-2-1 full court press). The Old Bridge Rockets, played the Berkeley Blizzard to a 1-1 draw Sunday in Berkeley. Goaltender Alejandro Diaz lead the charge with some spectacular saves while Christian Llerena, Jordan Moretti, Init Patel, Harry Grewal and Sami Abdisubhan combined for 15 stops. Charles Mantione scored in the 15th minute, leading the Old Bridge attack. Nick Petruzzi, Nick Santurro, Adam Eyerman, Sean Safari, Shawn Orzechowski, Eric Medina, Caine Czerula and Steven Contreras provided spirited play in an action-filled contest.

Registration is being accepted for the Old Bridge fall ice hockey youth instructional program, sponsored by the township Department of Parks, Recreation and Social Services. The program will be held on Sunday evenings, beginning Oct. 12, at the Old Bridge Sports Arena. Youngsters will be instructed on the fundamentals of hockey, including stick handling, passing, and shooting. Participants are required to wear full equipment. The sessions are broken into two age groups: 5-8 years of age and 9-13. The 5-8 group runs from 5:15-6:30 p.m., and the older group runs from 6:45-8 p.m. The cost is $226 for Old Bridge residents and $276 for nonresidents. The Sayreville Leprechauns Midget football team has played well so far, opening with a 25-6 win over Plainfield on Aug. 24. The Leprechauns received touchdowns from Ryan Switer, Chris Robinson and Rasheem Clark, and an extra point from Chris Reardon, while the defense was led by Larry Lenahan, Shawn Disbron and Jeff Scenna. On Aug. 31, the Leprechauns lost to the Morgan-Parlin Panthers, 14-0, despite strong performances by Glenn Wagner, Robert Gant, Mike Grecco and Matt Grutchs on defense, and Tyler Danielson on offense. They suffered another defeat on Sept. 7 against Linden, 38-0.
