Rumsonites Laurie Grubaugh and daughter, Malen, 4 1/2, were among the more than 400 participants in the recent Buddy Walk at the Jersey Shore sponsored by the National Down Syndrome Society. Despite rainy weather, the event, held at the Wall Township Municipal Park, raised some $40,000.

The Mental Health Association and Rumson/Middletown Buy-Rite will host Wine Fest ’03 Nov. 16, 4-7 p.m., at The Galleria in Red Bank. The event will feature gourmet hors d’oeuvres from 2 Senza Ristorante, music, and a wine connoisseur silent auction. Visiting vintners will be on hand for special wine tastings. Proceeds will benefit MHA, a nonprofit dedicated to advocating for improved care and treatment of persons with mental illness and for programs promoting mental health. Two celebratory public events are coming up in Little Silver. The new addition to the borough’s public library in the municipal complex on Prospect Avenue will be dedicated at 4 p.m. this Sunday, Oct. 26. The reopening of the renovated railroad station on Oceanport Avenue at Sycamore Avenue will be marked with festivities at the station at 2 p.m., Nov. 1.

Clean Ocean Action will hold its fall beach sweeps from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. this Saturday, Oct. 25. In Sea Bright, the cleanup will take place in two locations — the Anchorage beach, just north of the Rumson/Sea Bright bridge, and the borough beach, just south of the bridge. In Monmouth Beach, the cleanup will take place at the Monmouth Beach Bathing Pavilion and at the public access points across from the Monmouth Beach Cultural Center and across from Central Avenue. In Long Branch, participants are asked to gather at the beach by Brighton Avenue in the West End

The Monmouth Civic Chorus opens its 55th season on Nov. 22 at the First Presbyterian Church in Red Bank with a preview of its new CD, "Grace Notes," featuring favorite choruses from masterworks by Brahms, Haydn, Mozart, Mendelssohn, Rossini, Vivaldi and more. The chorus also will perform "Filius Prodigus," (The Prodigal Son) by the 18th-century French composer Marc-Antoine Charpentier. The program is offered under the chorus’ award-winning artistic director, Mark Shapiro. The concert will begin at 8 p.m. at the church, Tower Hill at 255 Harding Road. The First Assembly of God, 220 Sycamore Ave., in Shrewsbury, will feature the music of The Couriers in two performances on Sunday, Nov. 9, at 8:20 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. The Couriers have had a music ministry for 47 years during which they have traveled more than 4 million miles, performed in 81 foreign countries and all over the United States, and recorded 58 albums. The Northern Monmouth County Branch of the American Association of University Women is presenting a program, "Our Daughters, the Soldiers," at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 3, at the Eatontown Community Center, 58 Broad St., Eatontown. Dr. Helen Brudner of Fairleigh Dickinson University will talk about the trials and triumphs of women who have served or are serving in the U.S. military, with an emphasis on World War II and the current times. The program, which is free and open to the public, is offered through the Horizons Speakers Bureau of the New Jersey Council for the Humanities, a state partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities. More than 85 quality crafters and artists will be displaying their handcrafted items, including quilts, jewelry, photography, holi­day ornaments, wood items, coun­try crafts and much more.

Marine Science Consortium is offering a marine science day camp for students in grades four, five and six during the New Jersey Education Association’s teachers convention break, Nov. 6 and 7, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the consor­tium’s Sandy Hook headquarters.
