MONROE — Forsgate Country Club’s Banks Course was recently ranked No. 2 among private golf courses in New Jersey, second only to the Pine Valley Golf Club.

"We are very excited to have the renowned Banks Course named one of the finest golf courses in the state of New Jersey," said Christopher Schiavone, chief executive officer of RDC Group, which owns and operates Forsgate Country Club. "The unique design of this classic golf course, coupled with the rich history that exists inside the gates of Forsgate Country Club, provides an unforgettable golf experience for members."

Other private golf clubs with courses ranked by New Jersey Monthly magazine in the Top 10 included Baltusrol, Plainfield, Somserset Hills and Galloway.

Forsgate Country Club was founded in 1931 by John A. Forster, a Scottish golf enthusiast who commissioned golf course architect Charles "Steam Shovel" Banks to design an 18-hole course reminiscent of European golf holes.

Banks, known for his creativity in the use of the steam shovel, created the course with large traps and deeply sloped greens. The course opened in 1931 and its design has remained undisturbed for more than 70 years.

In addition to the Banks Course, Forsgate also boasts the 18-hole Palmer Course, with a traditional American design that features challenging water hazards on 10 holes.
