Obituaries Fredrick J. Giebel

Mr. Giebel, 85, of West Long Branch died July 29 at St. Barnabas Hospice and Palliative Care Center at Monmouth Medical Center, Long Branch. Born in New York City, he resided in Queens, N.Y., before moving to West Long Branch in 1969. Mr. Giebel was a technician at Diebold Safe Co. Prior to that, he was a New York City police officer, retiring in 1969. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member of the Lutheran Church of Reformation, West Long Branch, and a member of the Free and Accepted Masons. Mr. Giebel was predeceased by his wife, Katherine Chambers Giebel, in 1982. He is survived by his daughter, Dorothy Cichalski of West Long Branch; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Interment was at Woodbine Cemetery, Oceanport. The Damiano Funeral Home, Long Branch, was in charge of arrangements.

Jean M. Gallo Merullo

Mrs. Merullo, 84, of West Long Branch died July 20 at Monmouth Medical Center, Long Branch. Born in Watertown, Mass., she resided in West Long Branch since 1957. She was a homemaker and a parishioner of St. Jerome’s Roman Catholic Church, West Long Branch. She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Roland A. Merullo; a son and daughter-in-law, Thomas R. and Elizabeth Merullo of Beachwood; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Committal was at Woodbine Mausoleum, Oceanport. Arrangements were by Damiano Funeral Home, Long Branch. Memorial donations may be made to the West Long Branch First Aid Squad, P.O. Box 197, West Long Branch 07764.

Harmon W. "Bill" Chestman

Mr. Chestman, 75, of Long Branch died Aug. 1 at home. Born in Long Branch, he was a lifelong resident. Mr. Chestman was a driver at Monmouth County Reclamation Center for 10 years, retiring nine years ago. He was also the owner of Chestman’s Thoroughbred Stable. He was a member of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, Long Branch, and a member of Teamsters locals 574 and 11. Mr. Chestman was predeceased by a sister, Eleanor De Frice, in 2002; and two grandsons, Allen Chestman and William Chestman, in 1990. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Alice Morgan Chestman; three sons and daughters-in-law, Bill and Carolann Chestman of the Wanamassa section of Ocean Township, John and Kathy Chestman of the Oakhurst section of Ocean Township, and Allen and Christine Chestman of Little Egg Harbor; two sisters, Lillian Quackenbaum of Jacksonville, Fla., and Bonnie Terchill Scott of Graceville, Fla.; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. A funeral service was held at St. Luke’s Church. Interment was at Monmouth Memorial Park, Tinton Falls. The Damiano Funeral Home, Long Branch, was in charge of arrangements.

Rachel Carelli

Mrs. Carelli, 93, of Rumson died July 30 in Red Bank. She resided in West Long Branch and Long Branch prior to moving to Rumson 18 years ago. Mrs. Carelli was a homemaker. She was a communicant of the Church of the Nativity, Fair Haven. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Gloria F. and Joe Manzi of Rumson; a son and daughter-in-law, Edward and Diane Carelli of Boca Raton, Fla.; three sisters, Marion Verdi of Holbrook, N.Y., and Violet Gagliardi and Phyllis Marascia, of Farmingdale, N.Y.; and three grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial was offered at the Church of the Nativity, followed by interment at Woodbine Cemetery, Oceanport. The John E. Day Funeral Home, Red Bank, was in charge of arrangements.
