Ledford L. Powell, M.D., a thoracic surgeon whose office is in Freehold, has joined the medical staff of CentraState Medical Center, Freehold Township. Powell was previously at the University of California at San Francisco Medical Center, where he was a cardiothoracic fellow the past two years. Before that, he was a research fellow at the University of California at Irvine Medical Center in both cardiothoracic surgery and vascular surgery. He earned his medical degree at the University of Rochester in New York. He is certified in advanced trauma life support, advanced cardiac life support, and pediatric advanced life support.

ERA Advantage Realty Inc., Cream Ridge, will join the Upper Freehold Township and local businesses Sept. 18 in celebrating the second annual Upper Freehold Community Day. Festivities are open to the public and will begin at 1 p.m. at Byron Johnson Park, Upper Freehold Township. Activities will include inflatable attractions, pony rides, a petting zoo, magic show, music by the Allentown High School Jazz Band, Mahoney Brothers Band, and DJ Party Patrol, and a fireworks display. Harriet Zaslow, a Realtor at Weichert, Realtors’ Marlboro office, was recognized for her industry accomplishments in the month of August. Rutgers Mini-MBA Business Essentials Certificate program will return to Freehold Township Sept. 28-Dec. 14. The program is designed for professionals and managers seeking a deeper understanding of business and a better understanding of how various functional areas of organizations relate to one another, and for those considering an MBA.

The 12-week program features focused learning experiences around 12 subject areas, including business strategy, finance, marketing, law, ethics and organizational change. The sessions are delivered in three-hour modules and are delivered in a hands-on format designed for practitioners. Participants work on case studies or read assigned articles and explore them in the classroom.

Registrations are being accepted for the Freehold program as well as the sessions in Piscataway, Newark and Morristown. The Mini-MBA will be held on 12 Tuesday evenings from 6-9 p.m. The fee is $2,495 and includes tuition and materials. The Internal Revenue Service reminds small-business owners that free publications, Internet resources and business e-file are available. Small business owners and the self-employed are the focus of IRS outreach to help business taxpayers understand and meet their tax responsibilities.

On the small business section of www.IRS.gov, taxpayers can learn how the tax code treats different business structures, apply for an employer identification number, make tax payments, and even watch a streaming video of small business workshop.

A nursing opportunities open house will be held Sept. 21, 1:30-5 p.m., at the Monmouth County Care Centers John L. Montgomery Division, 115 Dutch Lane Road, Freehold Township. The event is designed to give those in the nursing profession an opportunity to explore employment with the Monmouth County Department of Human Services and Health facilities. Bruce R. Rosenblum, M.D., of Colts Neck, a board-certified neurosurgeon and director of neurosurgery at Bayshore Community Hospital, Holmdel, has been selected as Physician of the Year by the hospital’s medical staff. Dr. Rosenblum will be recognized at the Hospital Foundation’s Celestial Visions Charity Ball Oct. 9 at the Grand Marquis in Old Bridge.

According to a press release from Bayshore, Rosenblum is expanding the stereotactic aspect of his practice — that is, using image-guided techniques and robotics to perform surgery in a less invasive way.

Rosenblum received his medical degree from Mount Sinai School of Medicine, New York City. His internship and neurosurgery residency were at Mount Sinai Medical Center, where he also was chief resident in neurosurgery. He also had a surgical neurology fellowship at the National Institutes of Health’s National Institute of Neurologic and Communicative Disorders and Stroke, Surgical Neurology Branch, in Bethesda, Md.

In addition to being director of neurosurgery at Bayshore, Rosenblum serves on the hospital’s emergency and ambulatory care, and operating room committees. He also is director of the neurosurgery divisions at CentraState Medical Center, Freehold Township; Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank; and Kimball Medical Center, Lakewood.

Rosenblum is involved in a variety of organizations dealing with neurosurgery, including the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and its sections on pain, pediatrics, trauma and critical care, and tumors. His practice is in Shrewsbury.
