RED BANK — All of the electronic meters in borough parking lots and on streets are being reprogrammed to four-hour parking limits.

The meters formerly had three-hour limits.

In addition, the borough is studying the use of Smart Cards, in addition to coins, to pay meter charges, according to Neil Burnip, the borough’s parking director.

“We will also finish labeling to inform people at every meter of the change,” said Burnip, “and the remaining mechanical meters will also be removed and replaced with electronic models.”

Parking fees remain at 25 cents for 30 minutes, and 50 cents per hour.

There are a total of 718 meters in the borough’s parking lots and 324 on-street meters.

All of these meters will permit four-hour parking, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday through Saturday. Parking will remain free on Sundays.
