Man charged with cop assault

EDISON — A township man was arrested on charges of aggravated assault on a police officer last week.

Matthew Hoppe, 25, was also charged with resisting arrest, disorderly conduct and criminal mischief.

Patrolman Robert Dudash said Hoppe was in a parking lot across from JB’s Tavern on Woodbridge Avenue around 3 a.m. on Nov. 6, and was apparently involved in a verbal dispute with a group of people.

One of them flagged down Edison Police Officer A.J. Kohut, who was on patrol at the time, he said.

As he attempted to calm down Hoppe, who appeared to be intoxicated, Hoppe elbowed Kohut in the chest, said Dudash.

Hoppe had a cut lip, and after being placed under arrest, he began spitting saliva and blood around in the back seat of the patrol car and also attempted to kick out one of the windows, Dudash said.

Hoppe’s bail was set at $100,000. He was held at the Middlesex County Adult Correction Center in North Brunswick.
