NJCU to host Russ Thomsen Memorial Scholarship tourney

JERSEY CITY — The New Jersey City University women’s bowling team, which finished third in the nation at the 2004 NCAA Championships, and fifth in 2005 after winning the inaugural ECAC Tournament Championship, will host the Second Annual Russ Thomsen Memorial Scholarship Tournament on Sunday, Aug. 28, at the Woodbridge Bowling Center.

The center is located at 346 Main St. in Woodbridge. The tournament entry fee is $40. Full tournament rules and an entry form can be obtained on the NJCU Web site, www.njcu.edu, and follow the links to women’s bowling.

The tournament is named in honor of the late Russ Thomsen, the father of Rusty Thomsen, the assistant coach of the New Jersey City University women’s bowling team. The elder Thomsen was very active in youth athletics in Middlesex County during his life.

The younger Thomsen was named Co-bowler of the Year by the Middlesex County Bowling Association for the 2003-04 season, and in February 2005 made the cut at the U.S. Open.

The YABA (Young American Bowling Alliance)-sanctioned event will commence with a qualifying round of four games across eight lanes at 10 a.m., with the match play finals to begin approximately 30 minutes following the completion of the qualifying round.

Scholarship awards will be given to the champion, runner-up, and semifinalists in each division, and will be based on a 1-in-8 ratio.

Bowlers can compete in either the Handicap or Scratch division. Those entering the Handicap division must provide average verification at check-in.

To enter the tournament, send your name, phone number, address, national YABA identification number, date of birth and bowling average to: NJCU Women’s Bowling Team, c/o Jennifer Viens, 37 Mercer Road, Old Bridge 08857. Include with the application a check or money order made out to Woodbridge Bowling Center. The deadline for entry in Aug. 21. Bowlers can also apply as a walk-in at the center on the day of the event for an additional fee of $5, based on lane availability.
