Howell Recreation has award-winning week

The Howell Recreation Department was recognized by the New Jersey Rec-reation and Parks Association and the Monmouth County Board of Recreation Commissioners in the same week.

After accepting the NJRPA’s Excel-lence in Therapeutic or Wellness Award on March 21 for Howell’s “Teen Adven-ture” program, director Helene Schlegel returned from Atlantic City to notification that the department’s “Mommy, Me, and the Environment” had been selected to receive the Victor E. Grossinger Award for Innovative Programming from the county recreation commissioners.

The program teaches environmental education to 3- and 4-year-olds. This program sets the foundation for these young children’s attitudes toward the world around them. The program develops positive attitudes toward the environment at an early age, and as a result, creates socially conscious adults. Schlegel credits the dedication of the entire recreation staff for the success of these programs.
