Leave law-abiding immigrants alone in Freehold

It has been a while since I read a letter as hateful as the one written by Joan Kelly (“Government Must Respond to Illegal Residents,” News Transcript, June 20). It seems that you would like Freehold to return to the terrible days of 2003 and 2004. I was afraid that Ted Miller’s remarks would stir up some people like yourself who would feel free to make hateful remarks and remarks that were untruthful, half-truths and just plain inaccurate.

Police Chief Mitch Roth’s remarks concerning the immigrant situation here were right and accurate. I am glad that he will not go after anyone that is not breaking our laws and going about leading a normal productive life.

Ms. Kelly’s remarks are inaccurate, hateful and without any merit. … When it comes to illegal immigrants, can you prove that your ancestors entered legally, like you are trying to make some of our residents prove?

As far as taxes, don’t blame it on the Latinos. Taxes have been increasing at a steady rate long before they came. Blame it on the tax-and-spend politicians we have in this state and city. Put the blame where it lies. The children who attend our schools are just as much Americans as your children and they deserve to be educated. Don’t forget that fact. If every Latino left this city tomorrow, do you think for one minute that taxes would decrease? If you truly believe that, then I have a bridge I want to sell you.

I believe that people like you would like nothing more than to have old Freehold return. Old Freehold, where segregation was practiced. Segregated schools, housing, restaurants and other Jim Crow rules that would have made the old South proud. That’s not going to happen.

People like Ms. Kelly, Mr. Miller and Brian Sullivan almost want to make me support Mayor Wilson. Stop trying to demonize people who are less fortunate than you are. Remember, “there but for the grace of God go I.”
