Obama, McCain local campaigns plan Princeton headquarters

With the presidential election approaching, both Princeton Democrats and Republicans are working to establish campaign headquarters for their candidates.
Jenny Crumiller, president of the Princeton Community Democratic Organization, said Princeton supporters of Sen. Barack Obama are planning on opening a campaign headquarters above Nassau Interiors on Nassau Street at the end of August.
Ms. Crumiller said the space is owned by Nassau Interiors, which will be renting it to Princeton Obama campaigners at a bargain price.A combination of Princeton residents who have been working on Sen. Obama’s campaign, including some members of the PCDO, were scheduled to host a party as The Packet went to press Thursday. They hope to engage Princeton Democrats who supported 2008 Democratic presidential candidates other than Sen. Obama and have them join in supporting the Obama campaign. Another goal of the party was to raise money for rental fees on the Princeton campaign headquarters.
Meanwhile, Princeton Republicans are planning to open a campaign headquarters for Sen. John McCain. Dudley Sipprelle, chairman of the Princeton Borough Republican Committee and a write-in candidate in this year’s Borough Council elections, said Princeton Borough and Princeton Township Republicans are working to make this possible.
State Sen. Bill Baroni (R-Hamilton), the state chairman of Sen. McCain’s campaign, said he expects there will be a McCain headquarters in Princeton and that he knows of many very active Republicans who are affiliated with Princeton University.
”There are a lot of McCainiacs in Princeton,” he said. “We are obviously going to be working with our local organizations, including in Princeton, to build a network of headquarters throughout the state.”
Sen. Baroni, who helped open Sen. McCain’s New Jersey-New York regional headquarters Wednesday in Woodbridge, said he will soon be using his own campaign office on Nottingham Way in Hamilton as another local campaign headquarters for Sen. McCain, as he did during the presidential primaries.
On Saturday, members of Mercer County for Obama, which includes Princeton residents, will meet at 10 a.m. in the Ewing Democratic headquarters at 27 Scotch Road.
