Met Library to host Opera 101 monthly

The Metuchen Public Library, 480 Middlesex Ave., is hosting a new series, Opera 101, to be held at the library monthly from September through May. Anyone may attend the entire series, or one or any number in between. The proposed schedule is:

• Oct 20, Bel Canto: Rossini, Donizetti, and Bellini (“The Barber of Seville,” “Lucia,” “The Elixir of Love,” “Norma”)

• Nov 17, Verdi (“La Traviata,” “A Masked Ball”)

•Dec 15, Verdi (“Rigoletto,” “The Force of Destiny,” “Otello”)

•Jan 26, French Opera: Bizet and Offenbach (“Carmen,” “Tales of Hoffman”)

• Feb 23, Verismo: Leoncavallo and Mascagni (“Pagliacci,” “Cavalleria Rusticana”)

• Mar 16, Puccini (“La Boheme,” “Tosca,” “Madame Butterfly”)

• Apr 20, Strauss/Strauss (“Die Fledermaus,” “Der Rosenkavalier”)

• May 18, Wagner (“Die Meistersinger,” “Tristan und Isolde”).

The lectures will begin at 7:30 p.m. and last about one hour; there will be time for questions and comments.
