SCOTT FRIEDMAN MONROE — A local teenager has taken it upon himself to improve the grounds of the Woodland Elementary School, with a little help from his friends.

Michael Baumann, 17, a junior at Monroe Township High School, and his mates from Boy Scout Troop 3 spent a recent weekend landscaping and renovating an area of land near the main entrance of the Harrison Avenue school. The project involved planting shrubs and plants, mulching the area, installing a walkway with pavers and benches, and putting in edging.

Michael, a Scout since first grade, organized the effort for his Eagle Scout project.

“Having attended Woodland, I am very fond of the school and its faculty. Since it has provided me with so many memories and opportunities during the three years I had spent there, I felt it was my obligation to give back to the school’s staff and students, as well as the community as a whole,” Michael said.

Planning for the project began last March, and the plans were finalized in September. The work was done Nov. 21 and 22. More than 40 volunteers including troop members, family and friends helped. Michael’s brother’s company, Baumann’s Landscaping, contributed significantly to the project.

“I have never felt so accomplished upon completing the project, and I am quite proud of the finished product,” Michael said.

Michael’s mother, Louise, who is the librarian’s assistant at the school, has heard endless praise from students and staff on the outcome of the project.

Completing a community service project was part of the requirement to become an Eagle Scout, a rank Michael hopes to be awarded within the next year. SCOTT FRIEDMAN
