Mr. Whalen, 81, of Farmingdale, died Dec. 14, 2010, at home. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served during the Korean War. Prior to his 1991 retirement, he was a foreman for the New Jersey Department of Transportation in Neptune for 43 years, but remained a farmer his whole life. Mr. Whalen was predeceased by his wife, Josephine, in 1994; and a brother, John. Surviving are two daughters, Angela Perry and her husband, Joseph, of Truxton, N.Y., and Gina Bettencourt and her husband, Ron, of Toms River; a sister, Ruth Bennett of Freehold Township; and six grandchildren. A funeral service was held at the Clayton & McGirr Funeral Home, followed by interment at St. Rose of Lima Cemetery, both Freehold Township.
